HLR-50266The Curtiss P-40 E is the successor to the Hawk 81 A, better known as the Tomahawk. It first took flight on May 22, 1941. An order for 540 was received by Great Britain, who called it the Kittyhawk 1A, and other Commonwealth countries. Another order was made for 1500 planes for the US Army Air Force that used it under the name of Curtiss P-40 E who then sold them back to Great Britain in virtue of the land-lease agreement. The P-40E Kittyhawk 1A was first used by the armed forces of New Zealand, South Africa, Canada and the USSR. A fleet of 25 Kityhawk 1A’s was sold by Great Britain to Australia. Indeed, at the beginning of 1942, the Australian territories were threatened by the Japanese advance and an Australian squadron was formed of young pilots who trained before entering service for Squadron 75 in Port Moresby, New Guinea.
