The US Army used both towed and powered rollers. The towed sheepsfoot roller was specifically used for deep compaction. To be effective, a towed roller should be wider than the towing vehicle so the standard sheepsfoot roller came in the 2-drum configuration which then could be expanded out up to 7-drums by simply joining the requisite number together and centering the tongue.
