Fighting a war in the winter is a challenge at the best of times, but the Russian winters are famous for their severity. While the invaders were poorly prepared for “General Winter” and the sub-zero temperatures, the sturdy defenders of the Soviet Union were equipped with quilted jackets and long overcoats to shield them from the frigid conditions.

During the first years of the war, the Soviet Union planned their main offensives for the winter months. This enabled them to take maximum advantage of the invaders’ lack of familiarity with the weather conditions and their much longer supply lines.
