MMI-14722The P-47D was the largest single engine aircraft used in WWII by the United States Army Air Force. The aircraft was originally designed as a long-range fighter escort for bombing missions in both Europe and the Pacific though the P-47 was replaced by the even longer range P-51 within a year as a bomber escort, the incredible toughness and heavy firepower of the P-47 made it ideal as a low altitude fighter used to attack ground target the P-47D was used extensively in the European theatre of operations through the end of the war in May 1945. Most P-47’s were retired shortly after the war though some were used by reserve units afterward.
