HSG-40027The U.S.S. Gambier Bay was one of fifty Casablanca-class escort carriers produced from November, 1942-July, 1944. In 1944's Battle of Leyte Gulf, she (as part of Taffy 3) confronted multiple Japanese ships, including the Chikuma. Although shrouded in smoke and fog, the Gambier Bay was struck numerous times. During the fight, the Chikuma landed a direct hit. The blow proved fatal to the Gambier Bay, causing her to sink. In honor of her extraordinary heroism, the Gambier Bay was awarded four battle stars and shared Taffy 3's Presidential Unit Citation.
