Commissioned in 1942, sunk in 1943. There's no question that the career of the Italian battleship Roma was short and dramatic. For much of the war, the Italian Navy was far too short of fuel to sail their capital ships. Roma stayed in port for most of her year of existence. After the armistice with the Allies, the Italian Navy sailed towards surrender but were attacked by their former friends. German planes blew up and sank Roma on 9 September, 1943.
