The Montana-class battleship was an Iowa-class expansion and improvement type, and when completed, it was a battleship with a displacement equal to that of the Japanese Navy's Yamato-type battleship. 5 ships were approved for construction in 1940, but the construction of all ships was withdrawn in 1943 due to changes in the battlefield and changes in ship operation philosophy.
